What is the San Jacinto River Association?
The SJRA is a grass roots environmental non-profit organization based in The Highlands-
Channelview, Texas area. We are a volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation
of the San Jacinto River and its watershed.
- The association exist to preserve and protect the natural resources of the San Jacinto system and its
tributaries for present users and for posterity.
- This purpose will be fulfilled by encouraging proper economic use, development, improvement and
protection of the river system.
- The association will inform and educate the public about the river, serve as its advocate, and act as
its watchdog.
- The association will sponsor activities and events contributing to the welfare of the river system and
will preserve and enhance those natural resources having great aesthetic, recreational and economic value.

Our Objectives....
- Public Education- Alert the public through seminars and newsletters.
- Protection and Restoration- Wetland and wildlife habitat, water quality, recreational enjoyment,
public safety, private property from erosion.
- Advocacy- Effective enforcement of existing environmental regulations requiring all U.S.
waterways to be fishable and swimmable by 1983. Actual compliance with 1972 federal goal of eliminating all
pollution discharges into our waterways by 1985. Restructuring of current permitting process which gives
government approval for industries, municipalities and individuals to continue polluting and dredging.
Discontinuance of commercial sand dredging in the San Jacinto River.
- Research- Ongoing monitoring of water quality in the river by certified examiners. Utilizing all
available resources, the San Jacinto River Association will act as a watchdog to see that permit perameters
are enforced.. Search out existing federal and state regulations which can apply to protection
and defense of the river. Acquire sources of funds such as grants for financing our association's objectives.

FUTURE GOALS IDENTIFIED
- Monitoring water quality of the San Jacinto
River in the interest of public health and safety
- Protecting the recreational use of the San
Jacinto River
- Attending public hearings and meetings of the
he state and federal agencies responsible for
protection of our river
- Alerting the public to write letters to Texas
Natural Resources Conservation Commission as
it establishes new water standards for 1994-1997
or considers new or amended permits
- Alerting the public to write letter to Texas
Parks and Wildlife to establish a ban on
commercial dredging of the river
- Working with the public to write to the Coastal
Coordination Council to include the San Jacinto
River as a Special Management Areas
- Attending/testifying at public hearings on the
CCC's new Coastal Management plan and
providing written comments on this plan
- Providing tours of the river for the public
officials, business representatives, media to gain
greater appreciation of our rivers fragile beauty
and vital preservation
- Acquiring funding for financing our
association's objectives including
purchase/preservation of over 500 acres of vital
wetlands/ wilderness/ wildlife sanctuary adjacent
to the river
- Ongoing dialogue with Banana Bend Civic Assn. on proposed navigational dredging after the
October, 1994 flood
- Removal of the hazardous abandoned barges that litter the San Jacinto River by any means necessary.
