Banana Bend in 1979

By 1979, Banana Bend was a triving neighborhood. The beauty of the river and the forests made it a popular place indeed for familys headed for the suburbs. But trouble was still growing in the form of Sand Mining. Parker's Hole was just about played out as far as sand. The sand was dredged until the clay bottom was reached and the square acreage of the area had increased until the boundries of the Oxbow was reached. Open pit sand mining had become a much more popular sport. Although sand mining was playing out, it didn't stop barge owners from abandoning their junked out barges in the lagoon. Even to this day, the barge's previous owners were not forced to remove them, but instead were allowed to leave them abandoned even though legal action was taken to have the owners live up to their responsibilities.
