Abandoned Barges: A few photos
Abandoned barges are both an eyesore and a navagational hazard. The Coast Guard
disagrees with this premise, perhaps because they are more a hazard to the recreational
boating public. They seem to feel the average citizen doesn't need their help, and
only corporations and businesses deserve their assistance.
Judge for yourself!
BARGE10 JPG This barge ,located at the southern mouth of Mule Shoe Lake
is in a fork in the in the channel. Note the stobs protruding at
the top. Most of the barges have these, making the submerged
ones even more a hazard.
BARGE11 JPG This is a floater ( a moving barge). The floatation is still good;
meaning that this one can still float out into the channel where
it can cause damage to homes and other boats. High tites and
flooding will move this one.
BARGE3 JPG This old piece of a barge is full of foam for floatation. The ends
of the barges tend to preak off and float out into the channel
ending up floating up on beaches and out into channels where
they become a navagational hazard.
BARGE4 JPG This is a mostly intact barge. Abandoned on a clay plug, this
barge will probably not move, but it is located in the middle
of a recreationally popular lake. At night and even in the day,
this barge has caused a lot of accidents.
BARGE5 JPG This barge (same as barge4) is not only a navagational hazard,
but is also an eyesore. This lake is a popular boating area
during the summer. Hundreds of people fish and swim in this
area every weekend.
BARGE7 JPG This is probably the most dangerous barge in the area. Located
in the middle of the main channel, this partially submerged
barge has caused a lot of accidents. Several people have
had to be life-flighted (sent to the trauma center via helicopter)
after striking this barge. This barge is practically invisible
especially at night. It's low profile has caught even local
residents by surprise.
BARGE9 JPG This is the same barge as barge8. This is the view you get
as you head directly for it. As you can see, it's low profile
makes it difficult to pick out and many boaters have run
up on it, since it is right in the main channel.
The San Jac is a very popular recreational area. Popular with swimmers, skiers, personal
watercraft enthusiasts, and fishermen, this area attracts hundreds of local residents and
and tourists every weekend. We need the Coast Guard'e help in removing these hazards
before more people are hurt or killed!
